Everyone makes mistakes every now and then—even professional athletes. Some mistakes, however, can go on your criminal record and affect your life for many years. A Seattle Seahawks player was recently arrested on DUI charges.
Jeremy Lane, a cornerback for the Seahawks, was arrested on the morning of January 14. He was pulled over while traveling east on Interstate 90, near Mercer Island. He was booked into King County Jail for allegedly driving while intoxicated. He was later released after posting bail for an amount under $1,000. The Seattle Seahawks are aware of Lane’s arrest.
Lane tweeted that his blood alcohol content (BAC) was only 0.03—below the legal limit—so he did not know why he was arrested. However, under Washington law, a person can still be accused of a DUI if he or she is found to be affected by alcohol and/or drugs, regardless of BAC.
The police report is not yet available, so Lane’s actual BAC is still unknown. No further details were released.
DUI Penalties in Washington
DUI penalties are strict. If you are convicted of a first offense, you could face up to 364 days in jail and fines of up to $5,000. Your driver’s license will also be suspended for 90 days. If this is your second offense, you will face at least 30 days in jail. Minimum fines rise to $1,195.50. Your driver’s license will also be revoked for two years. If you have two or three prior offenses, additional penalties include participation in a 24/7 sobriety program. Your license will also be revoked for three years.
If your BAC is above 0.15 at the time of your arrest, you will be charged with aggravated DUI, which will result in even stricter penalties. You will face increased fines, jail time and license restrictions.
A DUI conviction is typically a misdemeanor. However, if you have four or more prior offenses in a 10-year period, or have been convicted of vehicular assault or vehicular homicide while under the influence, then the charge is elevated to a felony.
